Give to everyone who asks you, and if anyone takes what belongs to you, do not
demand it back.
As Christians what do we think this verse means? Does it just mean if someone is cold, give them a coat and NEVER let them forget they should bow down and pay homage because you were so gracious? You demanded something back then didn’t you? Does it mean if someone is hungry, feed them but make sure they remember what they owe you and they can pay it back later? Does it mean if someone is sitting in, ahem, your pew they better get up, because YOU sit there with your clan? Do you know what a clan is? It is backward, untaught, unlearned, social buffoons that would just as soon insult you as they would look at you! They have NO dignity or class and don’t have sense enough to know it, therefore they are never interested in learning to be better!
So many times I have seen people who were truly in need. Thirty five dollars was just as much as thirty-five thousand dollars to them because times were so hard for them. I have seen so-called Christians loan them the money that had it and then some, only to demand repayment plus interest! No, we should not enable a well and able-bodied person to never lift a finger, but when it is truly a need and they are doing all they can, why not just be a giver and let God repay you so much more than that person ever could?
But if anyone has the world’s goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God’s love abide in him? Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth.
Our giving should never come with strings attached, nor reminders of how wonderful we were when we stepped in and helped someone out. We should be cheerful givers, even if it is something as simple as a seat at church! We should give as God prompts and never mention it again! If we are mentioning it, we are either wanting some type of repayment whether praise, something materialistic, or to have our pride stroked by “looking good” to people we want to impress! God says not to let your left hand know what your right hand is doing. That is pretty secretive giving, my dear friend!.
Give, for much has been generously given to you by Jesus, Himself with His very life! Be observant and ask God to show you people who have a need. That need may be something as simple as your time, your listening ear, or your friendship, or possibly your prayers…God forbid it be YOUR PEW!! If we act in a way that is in any way close to “You owe me!”, just remember God says what man gives you is your reward and you have lost all reward for what you did in heaven! Give me what God can only give! Give me what moth can never corrupt or rust decay! No matter what, give me Jesus and His love! May I show forth that love as strongly as I show forth my faith!
Blessings, dear reader, and as those blessings come, don’t forget to bless others with some of it as well! Juliana
