2 I entreat and advise Euodia and I entreat and advise Syntyche to agree and to work in harmony in the Lord.
3 And I exhort you too, [my] genuine yokefellow, help these [two women to keep on cooperating], for they have toiled along with me in [the spreading of] the good news (the Gospel), as have Clement and the rest of my fellow workers whose names are in the Book of Life. Philippians 4:2-3
12 Clothe yourselves therefore, as God’s own chosen ones (His own picked representatives), [who are] purified and holy and well-beloved [by God Himself, by putting on behavior marked by] tenderhearted pity and mercy, kind feeling, a lowly opinion of yourselves, gentle ways, [and] patience [which is tireless and long-suffering, and has the power to endure whatever comes, with good temper].
13 Be gentle and forbearing with one another and, if one has a difference (a grievance or complaint) against another, readily pardoning each other; even as the Lord has [freely] forgiven you, so must you also [forgive].
14 And above all these [put on] love and enfold yourselves with the bond of perfectness [which binds everything together completely in ideal harmony].
15 And let the peace (soul harmony which comes) from Christ rule (act as umpire continually) in your hearts [deciding and settling with finality all questions that arise in your minds, in that peaceful state] to which as [members of Christ’s] one body you were also called [to live]. And be thankful (appreciative), [giving praise to God always]. Colossians 3:12-15
6 And the Lord said, Behold, they are one people and they have [a]all one language; and this is only the beginning of what they will do, and now nothing they have imagined they can do will be impossible for them. Genesis 11:6 Amplified Bible
As we see in our verses, harmony is a powerful tool in the Kingdom of God and in the world! Our text in Philippians talks about how important it was that the church, represented by these two women who at one time had worked together toward a common goal, remained in love and harmony. Their work was powerful as to the spreading of the gospel! They had not only been vital to Paul’s ministry, but to several other ministries as well. Notice Paul says to advise them to agree and work in harmony. Why is the word agree so important here? Because it works hand in hand with harmony. You cannot have harmony without agreement and you can’t have agreement without harmony as it is meant in the Greek. In the Greek agree means “to be harmonious”. In Matthew 18:19 it tells us, “”Again, I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything you ask for, it will be done for you by my Father in heaven.” Harmony among the brothers and sisters in Christ brings answers to prayers, even to the point of miraculous answers! You cannot be gossiping about, arguing with, and walking out of love if you expect to walk in this kind of prayer power! No wonder satan wants to start little fires of discontent among the brethren.
In the Old Testament we see in Genesis 11:6 that harmony is so powerful that it even was causing the godless people at the Tower of Babel to have success! They had made up their minds to work together to build a tower that reached heaven. God said, “Behold, they are one….” In other words, they are in such harmony, NOTHING SHALL BE IMPOSSIBLE TO THEM! God had to bring confusion by bringing about diverse languages to the point they could no longer communicate to stop them from succeeding! Again, we see great power in harmony in working together!
Paul also teaches in Colossians 3:12-15 that above all things we are to clothe ourselves in love, being gentle and forgiving freely one another. When we do this it says we will be bound together in “ideal harmony”. Harmony brings peace, which causes us to hear clearly the voice of the Holy Spirit! It brings wisdom that is beyond our natural means! When we have the wisdom of God guiding us failure is out of the question and success is guaranteed!! Peace also rids us of stress which can cause havoc in our physical bodies and our emotions, as well! Peace has many positive advantages and you can’t have it without harmony!
We see harmony brings power in prayer, it brings a greater anointing for the gifts to work together so that the gospel of Christ can spread freely and to be received joyfully! It brings wisdom and love which brings greater faith for faith works by love! Remember, nothing is impossible to those who believe!
Stay in harmony, my dear reader! Harmony is like the heart is to the body! It brings life and strength to us to accomplish what needs to be done in these last days when the harvest is so plentiful and the workers are few! Together with God, we can accomplish any and every goal God has for us!
